Philadelphia Portrait Gallery

By 1836, all of the Second Bank's funds had been transferred to state banks. Designed by architect William Strickland and built between 1819 and 1824, the Second Bank is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. There is always something to look at and read depending on your interest. Second Bank itself is the perfect backdrop for the intimate exhibition. The Greek revival design is an architectural gem that is one of the best examples from the early 19th century, when classical revival was just taking off as the national style of the time. The interior walls still maintain the same blushing pink color as when they were first painted in 1824. Portraits by artist Charles Willson Peale form the core of the collection. 

In the early 1800's, these likenesses of "worthy Personages" were exhibited in Peale's Philadelphia Museum, located on the second floor of Independence Hall. Additional portraits by other artists, particularly a number by British pastel artists James and Ellen Sharples, have been added to the collection through the years. The Second Bank of the U.S. is located at 420 Chestnut Street. Up the Pennsylvania blue marble stairs and inside the beautiful Classical Revival building, the space invites visitors to travel slowly through the galleries and take time to understand the nuances of the material. But given its small size, the gallery also works well for casual visitors. I was lucky enough to tour the gallery with National Park Service museum curator Karie Diethorn. 

When I first went looking for the Portrait Gallery, I walked right by it.  The portrait gallery is mainly composed of portraits of famous people, including early American politicians and other celebrities such as Einstein. In the center of the building is a transparent ceiling. In addition to portraits, there are also some very modern sculptures. A lot of portraits, a lot of art works, a lot of great ones, it's only if you have an artistic cell, or you must be able to understand it. After the demise of the Bank in 1836, the building changed hands and function, which resulted in changes to its interior, and even some to its exterior. The Second Bank now features a Portrait Gallery with "The People of Independence" exhibit, a  permanent collection of more than 150 portraits of 18th and 19th century political leaders, military officers, explorers and scientists, including many by noted artist Charles Willson Peale. 

Chartered by Congress in 1816, the Second Bank of the United States played a pivotal role in the "bank wars," when President Andrew Jackson contended that the Second Bank was unconstitutional and dangerous to republican ideals. Scenes of chaos are placed behind sheer panels to combat Peale's vision, reminding visitors of the era's volatility. In the southern gallery, 84 paintings by Charles Willson Peale dominate the space. Peale was the foremost portraitist of his day and the current arrangement echoes the first public museum he opened in 1802 on the second floor of Independence Hall. I found the central main gallery to be the most remarkable space. By the time Peale died in 1828, his museum was struggling financially and in 1848, the City of Philadelphia purchased 86 of Peale's portraits at auction. Additional portraits have been added to the collection through the years, including a number by British pastel artists James and Ellen Sharples. 

View the portrait collection online - and be intrigued by the people you meet. The "People of Independence" exhibit provides a glimpse into the lives of those who prized order and reason, yet lived in a world marked by disease, slavery, and the fear of the unknown. I thought this "attraction" was only an exquisite building. Instead, it is a museum housing fine art. Check the website for dates and times it is open. I've added it to my must-see list, for the next Philly visit. My rating is based on research upon my return home. The building itself is a work of art, and a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. If you're a beginner photographer or even if you know a few things about taking portraits, there are some basic things you should always remember to shoot better photos. The lens you choose will have a big impact on your portraits and how they look and feel. A great way to give your portraits a desired visual impact is to choose a wide-angle lens. You can shoot from below your subject to make them seem larger than life. 

Adjustments can be made to RAW files just like other files, though not all image editors support this format. If you're going to be shooting outside with natural light, consider how the time of day and direction in which you shoot will affect your subject. Most likely, you'll want to avoid shooting at midday as this is when harsh sunlight will be the strongest. However, if the weather will be overcast, then the afternoon may be the best opportunity for good softer light. 

Think about the end results and the types of portraits you want. The viewer will also likely know that a prop is just that, a prop. So how can you be different with your props? Instead of placing them where they might naturally go, such as a soccer ball at the feet, perhaps your subject could balance it on their head? It may as well be interesting if it's going to be used as a prop. If it seems like a stretch to include a certain prop in your portrait and have it look natural, then it's probably best to not use that prop at all. Trust me on this - you will get better results when you slow down and think, before pressing the button. Many photographers feel it limits their creativity, and is cumbersome and just plain annoying. If that rings true for you as well - I will tell you two reasons why I recommend this, and you can decide.

 When I tell my students this in the classroom I often get met with a lot of resistance to using a tripod. So for example, if you want to get a clear shot of your dog racing towards you, you can select a fast shutter speed and let the camera choose the aperture for you. Aperture Priority Mode lets you select the aperture you wish to use and then the camera adjusts the shutter speed accordingly. So for instance, if you're shooting a portrait and want to blur the background, you could simply select a wide aperture and let the camera figure out what shutter speed is appropriate. I'm doing an outdoor photo shoot later today - hopefully our  British weather will be kind! It is taking place in a woodland setting and the white balance comment has reminded me to take a grey card with ma along with a large reflector (which I rarely use because I struggle to fold it back up to its tiny size - any tips for this?).
